UNIVERSITY PROGRAM COUNCIL
JONI MITCHELL AND THE L.A. EXPRESS
Memorial Coliseum
February 1, 1976
The release of her “Hissing of Summer Lawns” album in the fall of 1975, which was followed by a live “Miles of Aisles” double album, was the basis for the concert in Tuscaloosa. Saxophonist Tom Scott and the L.A. Express, which featured a series of crackerjack musicians including bassist Max Bennett, pianist Victor Feldman, drummer John Guerin, and a flashy young guitar player named Robben Ford opened the show for Mitchell, then served as her band for her two sets. Mitchell’s repertoire included songs from throughout her career as music from her sizzling new album including “In France They Kiss on Main Street,” “Edith and the Kingpin” and more. In her black designer dress and roses embroidered on the sleeves, she played an acoustic guitar most of the concert, smiling, and telling stories with romantic edges.
